Shaping the Future of Ohio Higher Education
Chancellor Eric Fingerhut
Monday, March 3, 9:45 – 10:45 a.m.

Join Chancellor Eric Fingerhut on Monday morning to hear about the future of Ohio higher education. Learn more about The University System of Ohio and its master plan, the Chancellor’s expectations for institutions and faculty, and his vision for online learning in Ohio.

Eric Fingerhut was appointed the seventh Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents Ohio Board of Regents on March 14, 2007. He was the first to be appointed by the Governor of the State of Ohio as a member of his cabinet, and is charged with building a system of higher education designed to prepare all Ohioans for the 21st century and rival the nation in accountability and innovation.

Chancellor Fingerhut served as Ohio State Senator in 1991-92 and from 1999 to 2006. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1993 and served on committees related to science, foreign affairs and banking. Chancellor Fingerhut has served as Director of Economic Development Education and Entrepreneurship as a member of the Business Administration faculty at Baldwin-Wallace College and as an adjunct faculty member in the Case Western Reserve University Department of Political Science, School of Law, and Weatherhead School of Management.

Ohio Education Panel
Tuesday, March 4, 12:15 – 1:45 p.m.

Join the Ohio Education Panel for an engaging discussion of the issues facing higher education in Ohio. The Panel—consisting of an Ohio college president, provost, faculty member and student—will address issues ranging from structural changes needed to provide more affordable education to Ohioans, to a rethinking of the mission of higher education, to the changing needs of students in the 21st century. The panelists are: Morris W. Beverage, Jr., President of Lakeland Community College; Helen Grove, Senior Vice President and Provost at Sinclair Community College; Karen Swan, Research Professor and faculty member at Kent State University; and Kate Christobek, senior undergraduate student at The Ohio State University. Eugene Rutz, Academic Director at the University of Cincinnati, will moderate the panel and ask questions submitted by attendees

Dr. Morris W. Beverage, Jr. is President of Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. Prior to becoming president, Dr. Beverage served as Vice President for Administrative Services and Treasurer for 11 years at Lakeland. He represented the Ohio Community College sector on the National Governors' Association State Policy Academy. Dr. Beverage is past president and board member of the Central Association of College and University Business Officers and served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of College and University Business Officers. He holds an associate of arts degree from Lakeland, a bachelor of science and masters in business administration from Lake Erie College and an executive doctorate of management degree from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management.


Dr. Helen Grove is the Senior Vice President and Provost at Sinclair Community College. In her position as Chief Academic Officer, she is responsible for the oversight of the college’s academic programs, as well as the Organizational Development/Human Resources unit. Helen began her tenure at Sinclair Community College in 1999 as Dean, Division of Extended Learning and Human Services and Interim Director, Technology Enhanced Learning. She comes to Sinclair from East Carolina University where she served as Dean and Professor, School of Human Environmental Sciences from 1987-1999. Dr. Grove holds a bachelor of science degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College and master’s of science and doctoral degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.


Dr. Karen Swan is Research Professor in the Research Center for Educational Technology at Kent State University and a faculty member in the Instructional Technology program in the College and Graduate School of Education, Health and Human Services. Dr. Swan has authored over 70 journal articles and book chapters, produced several hypermedia programs, and co-edited two books on educational technology topics. Her current research focuses on data literacy, online learning and ubiquitous computing in education. She is the Special Issues Editor for the Journal of Educational Computing Research, Editor of the Journal of the Research Center for Educational Technology, and serves on the review boards for many educational technology journals and conferences.


Kate Christobek is a senior at The Ohio State University triple majoring in political science, sociology and journalism. After graduating from Olentangy High School in 2004, she enrolled at Ohio State and soon got involved with Undergraduate Student government. She served as the Vice-President in 2006 and currently serves as President of the undergraduate student body. As President, she also serves on the 2012 Bicentennial Commission and the Young Professionals Commission in the city of Columbus. Kate is also involved with her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta and BuckeyeThon, a 14-hour dance marathon that benefits Columbus Children’s Hospital. Outside of this involvement, Kate has interned for C-SPAN, 10-TV, and the United States Senators from Ohio.


Eugene Rutz is an Academic Director in the College of Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. Eugene’s current activities include managing the College’s accelerated engineering degree programs, supporting faculty in distance learning and instructional technology, and working with local high schools on the development and delivery of a pre-engineering course. Eugene has taught as an adjunct in the College using a variety of instructional technologies including interactive video, Web-based, and streaming media. Several of his instructional modules for the high school project are available on
YouTube. Eugene has been an active member of the ODCE Conference for as long as anyone can remember, and is currently serving as conference co-chair.
